1 Kings 20:1–43 Prophetic Condemnation of Ahab for Releasing Ben-Hadad

20:1 aBen-Hadad, King of Aram, gathered all his army, and thirty-two kings, horses, and chariots were with him, and he went up, besieged Samaria, and fought against it. 2 He sent messengers to Ahab, King of Israel, in the city, 3 and said to him, “Thus says Ben-Hadad, ‘Your silver and your gold are mine, and your good wives and children are mine.’” 4 And the King of Israel answered and said, “According to your word, my lord the king, am I and all that is mine.” 5 And the messengers returned and said, “Thus says Ben-Hadad, saying, ‘Because I sent to you saying “Your silver and your gold and your wives and your sons you shall give to me,” 6 indeed, tomorrow I will send my servants to you, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants, and they will seize all the delight of your eyes.’” 7 And the King of Israel called to all the elders of the land, and he said, “Know, now, and see that this one seeks evil, because he has sent for my wives and for my sons and for my silver and for my gold, and I have not refused him.” 8 And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen, and do not comply.” 9 And he said to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, “Say to my lord, the king, ‘All that you have sent to your servant in the beginning I will do, but this thing I am not able to do,’” and the messengers went and gave him the answer. 10 And Ben-Hadad sent to him and said, “bThus shall the gods do to me and even more if the dust of Samaria suffices for handfuls for all the people who are at my feet.”b 11 And the King of Israel answered and said, “Tell him, ‘Let not one who buckles his weapons boast like one who unbuckles them.’” 12 When (he) heard this answer, he was drinking, he and the kings, in pavilions, and he said to his servants, “Proceed!” and they proceeded against the city.

13 And behold, one prophet drew near to Ahab, King of Israel, and said, “Thus says YHWH, ‘Have you seen all this great crowd? Behold, I am giving it into your hand, and you will know that I am YHWH.’” 14 And Ahab said, “By whom?” And he said, “Thus says YHWH, ‘By the young men of the provincial commanders.’” And he said, “Who will begin the battle?” And he said, “You.” 15 And he mustered the young men of the provincial commanders, and they were two hundred and thirty-two, and after them he mustered all the people, all the people of Israel, seven thousand. 16 And they went out at noon, and Ben-Hadad was getting drunk in the pavilions,c he and the thirty-two kings who were helping him. 17 And the young men of the provincial commanders went out first.
